Cars damaged after arson attacks in Bridport: police appeal for witnesses

POLICE in Bridport are appealing for witnesses and information after a number of arson attacks to vehicles in the town centre. A total of five cars were damaged at around 9.30pm on Sunday, 18 October 2009.

Damaged vehicles included a green Land Rover and a blue Vauxhall Astra parked along Tamar Mews, a black Vauxhall Zafira and a silver Vauxhall Vectra parked along East Street and a red Vauxhall Astra parked along Princess Street.

Following these reported arson attacks, Bridport officers were supported by colleagues from Dorchester and Weymouth, with dog handlers and the Force helicopter also helping to search the area.

An extensive investigation has begun and both house-to-house enquires and enhanced patrols will be taking place in the town.

Bridport officers are still investigating three earlier arson attacks that damaged vehicles at West Allington and the Dreadnought Trading Estate on Sunday, 6 September 2009. All of these crimes may be linked – however, officers are keeping an open mind and are appealing to members of the public for any information they may have.

Inspector Alan Jenkins, Bridport Section Commander, said: “These acts of arson have the potential to cause serious injury and damage and it is fortunate that no-one has been hurt as a result of these reckless attacks.

“By definition, cars are full of combustible materials, including fuel, and such fires can be incredibly dangerous if not spotted quickly.

“I am appealing for anyone who witnessed any of Sunday’s arson attacks, and anyone who saw the earlier attacks on Sunday, 6 September, to contact us urgently.

“I ask all residents to think back to Sunday evening and to let us know if they remember any suspicious activity along the affected roads.

“I’m particularly interested to hear from anyone who might recall a strange petrol purchase or perhaps a person with clothes that smelled of smoke.

“It’s also possible that you may have noticed someone washing clothes under unusual circumstances or at an unusual time – any information could help us with this investigation.

“It is vital that those responsible are brought to justice as swiftly as possible.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 01305 222 222 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
